The design was soon axed for being too complicated and expensive to make — sending its value to collectors soaring.

The toy was released by Kenner in 1978 — a year after the first film in the sci-fi blockbuster franchise.

It is still in its original sealed packaging.

The online sale by Hake’s Auctions, in Pennsylvania, US, ends at midnight on Wednesday.

Auctioneer Alex Winter said: “This is the highest-graded example of the double-telescoping Luke Skywalker we have ever offered.

“It is a truly remarkable piece for any serious Star Wars collection.”

Hake’s sold a 1979 Boba Fett prototype for a record £188,000 last year.

The sale takes place on Wednesday.
