As Birkin’s daughters carried her coffin, the singer’s 1983 song, Fuir le bonheur de peur qu’il ne se sauve (Running away from happiness lest it run away) was playing.

According to WWD, both of Birkin’s daughters gave impassioned speeches remembering their late mother.

“I see all your souls in pain without her,” Charlotte Gainsbourg, 52, said. “I can already see the void she has left in us. She is my mother, she is our mother.”

Gainsbourg concluded her speech with lyrics from Jane B, a song written by her father Serge Gainsbourg.

Birkin’s other daughter, Lou Doillon, 40, whom she shared with Jacques Doillon, shared several anecdotes and adventures she shared with her mother such as a road trip to Death Valley in the United States and a time her mother accidentally threw a diamond ring into the bin.

“Thank you for all these adventures, thank you for not having been ordinary, reasonable or docile. The world of tomorrow, very peaceful and reasoned, it already upsets me,” Doillon said.

Singer Vanessa Paradis attended the service as well as actresses Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert and Charlotte Rampling.

Birkin died on July 16 at the age of 76 after reportedly suffering from ongoing effects of a mild stroke back in 2021 and a broken shoulder blade.
