It’s hard to imagine Full House without John Stamos, but it turns out that was very nearly our reality.
The actor actually tried to leave the show just a few months after it initially aired. And the reason why? Jodie Sweetin.
On the first episode of Dave Coulier’s new podcast Full House Rewind, the show’s creator Jeff Franklin revealed that Stamos felt intimidated by Sweetin, who “stole the show” at their first table read.

This led to Stamos calling his agent, labelling his casting on the series as a “huge mistake”.
Franklin says that at the table read, the room was full of studio executives “all there to see Stamos”. But when Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner, started reading her lines, it was clear she was the real star.
Coulier, who played Joey Gladstone on the series, then recalled: “And I remember walking out with John [Stamos]. He’s like, ‘The whole show is going to be her. We can’t do this!”
The show’s creator didn’t find out until much later how serious Stamos was about not going ahead with Full House. He “was so upset about having to play second fiddle to these really funny kids”, Franklin revealed.
As Franklin remembered it, Stamos told his agent, “This is a mistake. Get me off this show.”

Of course, we know now that Stamos remained on the show, portraying Uncle Jesse for the whole eight seasons of Full House‘s run. It launched him to stardom, cementing Stamos as a legendary TV star.
He, and the majority of the cast, returned for the Netflix reboot, titled Fuller House, in 2016.
