But car travel sickness can be a massive downside to life on the road.

To help ease the way, car leasing experts at Leasing Options have given their expert advice on how to make journeys that bit easier.

Take care with sickness tablets

Hyoscine hydrobromide is a medication taken to prevent travel sickness.

However, it can cause side effects which could be dangerous when driving.

You should seek expert medical advice if you think you suffer from any side effects from hyoscine hydrobromide before getting behind the wheel.

If you do drive whilst experiencing side effects that influence your driving, you could face a £1,000 fine for failure to have proper control of the vehicle or full view of the road and traffic ahead.

Avoid foods that are slow to digest, greasy or acidic

Heavy foods such as greasy fast food takeaways and acidic foods will make car travel sickness worse as they will stay undigested in your body longer than any other food group.

Instead, you should snack on something lighter like bananas, cereal or bread

Drink water, chamomile tea, and chew gum

It’s important to stay hydrated when suffering from car travel sickness as this can help to prevent headaches and dizziness.

However, you should avoid liquids like milk or soft drinks as these can make sickness worse.

Chewing gum also can reduce the mild effects of car travel sickness due to the mint taste.

Additionally, the motion of chewing can ease symptoms of sickness, similar to how chewing on an aeroplane stops ears from popping.

If you’re a passenger, taking over as driver can ease symptoms

As many as 1 in 5 adults suffer from car sickness, so if you are feeling car travel sick as a passenger, it may help to take over as driver, as long as you’re insured to drive it.

However, driving the car yourself means your brain is using its motor commands to control the car and predict the motion, distracting it enough to not process the feeling of sickness.

Travel during children’s sleep times

If you are road-tripping with children who suffer from travel sickness, it is a good idea to plan your travel times around their sleeping schedule.

If you know your child is likely to take a nap midday or go to sleep by early evening, it is best to get on the road just before these times so they’re more likely to sleep through the journey.

This comes after drivers were left stunned after discovering they can parallel park perfectly every time by following expert fool-proof tips.
