WATCHING Netflix on the go is a great way to pass the time, especially if you’re travelling or commuting.
But using the Netflix app on your iPhone and Android device could accidentally be using up your data if your settings aren’t set up properly.
Change the settings to save data – and a potential bill shock
And if you’ve got a limited amount of data, that could also turn into a nasty bill shock at the end of the month.
So check yours now to ensure these two settings are switched on correctly.
How do I stop Netflix from using my mobile data?
Video streaming can use up quite a bit of data, so if you want to switch it off on Netflix here’s how.
Open the Netflix app.
Tap on your profile photo in the top right.
Go to App Settings.
Then Mobile Data Usage.
There are four options to choose from.
Depending on how limited your data is, Save Data is a good option as it means you can still access Netflix on the go but the platform will cleverly reduce the video quality down so you don’t use as much data.
But if you want to stop the app using data entirely, tap Wi-Fi Only.
This means the app won’t load anything without a Wi-Fi connection – so be sure to download your favourite shows and movies beforehand.
Download Netflix shows over Wi-Fi instead of using data
The Netflix app should automatically be set not to allow you to download shows over data.
But if you’ve accidentally switched it on previously and forgot, here’s how to switch it off.
From the same App Settings screen as before, look for Wi-Fi Only and switch it off.
Now downloads will only happen when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
