Azpilicueta is expected to join Atletico Madrid on a free transfer now that his Chelsea exit has been confirmed.

Chelsea have allowed him to leave a year early, with his contract not expiring until next summer.

In a video shared to the club’s social media channels, Azpilicueta was shown a montage from his time in West London.

The footage reduced him to tears before he said an emotional goodbye to the club’s supporters.

“It is difficult to express with words what I feel,” admitted Azpilicueta. “It has been incredible.

“And just, thank you to everyone, because it couldn’t happen without the help of a lot of people. What a journey.

“Those moments that I take with me, you know, will last forever. This is my home and I hope to see everybody here back one day.

“Because when I arrived, nobody knew me about how I was, what kind of player. What is he doing here?

Another commented: “Captain, leader, legend. Thank you for all the memories Azpi.”

A third supporter also added: “A guy and more. Thank you legend.”
