Chelsea and Man Utd were locked in negotiations with Erik ten Hag seeing three bids rejected before striking a deal to land his top transfer target.

Mount had just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge after failing to agree an extension despite talks.

And Chelsea owner Boehly did not give the 24-year-old a lengthy send off.

He put out a 31-word statement alongside co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano.

It read: “Mason is a consummate professional and a popular figure at the club.

“We want to thank him for all his efforts on and off the pitch throughout his time at Chelsea.”

Mount joined the club as a six-year-old and went on to win the Champions League with his boyhood team in 2021.

He put out an emotional farewell message in a video, telling fans: “I feel you deserve more than a written statement so I wanted to tell you directly how grateful I’ve been for all your support over the last 18 years.

“I know some of you won’t be happy with my decision but it’s what’s right for me at this moment in my career.

“I want to say thank you to the academy, the managers I’ve worked under. The backroom staff, the unsung heroes of Cobham.

“My team-mates who I’ve played with over the years that have become brothers.

“My family for their continued love and support and most importantly you guys for sticking with me throughout.”

Yet some fans believe he made a cheeky dig at Chelsea as he was unveiled as a United player when he said: “Red is the colour.”

Mount will wear the No7 shirt at Old Trafford.
