The Spaniard was the best man for many years – between the sticks.
But now he’s a free man – on the day he gets hitched to singer Edurne Garcia.
And as De Gea goes from Red Devil to Wed Devil there’s another major twist.
United have asked the 32-year-old NOT to sign for anyone else.
That’s because manager Erik ten Hag has yet to find a replacement as he juggles his limited budget.
De Gea has huge affection for United after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
So he’s unlikely to raise a finger at the club’s request just before he puts a ring on it.
But it sums up a transfer saga that’s drifted on for many months.

Talks over a new contract rumbled on and stumbled off before ending as he declined a pay cut from £375,000 a week to £200k.
Yet his divorce from Old Trafford is not as clear-cut as it seems.
Whatever happens, De Gea is set for a joyful Saturday as he weds TV presenter and actress Edurne, 37.
Ironically they started dating in the year he joined United.
Now the couple – whose first child, daughter Yanay, was born in March 2021 – are tying the knot in their home country.
Around 80 to 100 guests are reportedly expected at the venue in Menorca.
De Gea, then, is switching from the Theatre of Dreams to his Match of the Day.
But after his honeymoon will there be extra time at Old Trafford?
