A DRIVER was trapped in a runaway car for hours when the cruise control malfunctioned forcing him to drive 320 miles until he ran out of fuel.

The driver, named in local reports as Mr Luo, remained stuck outside the city of Zhuzhou, in Hunan province, after his Haval H6 crossover refused to slow down from his speed of around 62mph.

A driver was trapped in his car for almost five hours on a Chinese highway after his cruise control and brakes malfunctioned

The driver was forced to speed down the highway at around 62mph until his car ran out of fuel

He was unable to cancel the cruise control mode in his vehicle and then realised that his brakes weren’t working either, according to local media.

Mr Luo phoned the local authorities while driving to alert them of his terrifying situation.

The police sent an escort to the highway to make sure the driver didn’t crash into any anyone, but even after Haval engineers were called to speak live with Mr Luo, nothing could be done to stop the out of control vehicle.

Following the malfunction, the driver was forced to keep speeding down the highway for hundreds of miles until his car eventually ran out of fuel.

This Haval SUV  is one of the most popular car models in China, first introduced in 2011. Since October 2015 however, the five-door SUV has been the best selling SUV in the country.

Haval does not sell vehicles in most western countries, including the UK and the US.

The incident with Mr Luo is not the first of its kind, after a car in China was reported to be stuck in cruise control on the motorway for over 50 miles in 2019.
