Wheelchair dancer Paula Moulton, Britain’s Got Talent alum, dies aged 52

Paula Moulton, who is best remembered for appearing on Britain’s Got Talent, has died aged 52.

Moulton’s dance act Strictly Wheels confirmed her death via a Facebook post.

“We are devastated to announce the sudden passing of our co-founder Paula,” the message read.

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this extremely sad time.

“Paula’s legacy will always live in our memories from her utter joy of dance. #soundon for our favourite music from dance class.”

The page posted a slideshow featuring pictures of Moulton and her dance partner Gary Lyness.

The clip featured a song she enjoyed during dance class, Shut Up and Dance by WALK THE MOON.

Moulton and Lyness made it to the semifinals of the reality show Britain’s Got Talent back in 2012. The dance duo performed a routine to Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind.

Previously, the pair had competed in numerous dance competitions within the UK and around Europe.

During the pair’s audition, judge David Walliams said, “I thought that was amazing, you turned what might’ve been a negative, into a positive … It was absolutely fantastic.”

As well as appearing on Britain’s Got Talent, Moulton also spoke out about MRSA, which was the infection that led her to using a wheelchair in 1995.

“I got pneumonia and in hospital I contracted MRSA and it damaged my pelvis, my lower spine, my hips and my femurs,” she told the Daily Star in a 2012 interview.

“I’ve got nerve damage. I can stand but I can’t walk and I use leg splints when I do stand.

“It should have killed me because I had septicemia. I’m lucky to be alive.”

In 2016, Moulton and Lyness launched Strictly Wheels which provides classes for wheelchair dance, and also works to promote and raise awareness of the sport throughout the UK.
