De Gea’s contract is set to expire on Friday and United are expected to sign a new keeper this summer.
Inter star Onana is understood to be the club’s preferred target, having previously played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio is now in England to finalise the deal.
Ausilio flew into Manchester on Monday for face-to-face talks with United officials.
Inter are said to be willing to sell Onana in order to fund further signings but the two clubs are currently some way apart in their valuations.
United were hoping to seal a £43million deal for Onana in order to solve their goalkeeping concerns.
De Gea is currently set to leave at the end of his contract after failing to agree terms on a new deal.
The Spaniard is United’s highest earner on £375,000-per-week and would need to take a pay cut to remain at Old Trafford.

United are believed to have accepted that he will be leaving and are therefore in the market for a new keeper.
Dean Henderson had also been expected to depart following his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.
However, there have been reports that Ten Hag could keep the Englishman at the club for next season.
