De Gea is currently set to leave the club once his contract expires at the end of the month.

United have offered him a new deal, but with a reduced salary, and hope to clarify his future this week.

Dean Henderson is also expected to depart the club this summer, intensifying the need to recruit a new goalkeeper.

That new stopper now looks set to be Onana, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, who report the deal has progressed following talks on Friday.

Club representatives met with the player’s agent and are ready to pay £43million plus add-ons to complete the transfer in the next week.

Onana had changed agents in order to get the deal done, according to the Daily Mail, with his new representatives handling talks with United on Friday.

He will reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, having previously played under the Dutchman at Ajax.

The 27-year-old made 145 appearances under Ten Hag, winning three league titles and a pair of Dutch Cups.

He had been linked with Chelsea earlier in the window before United entered the race to sign him.

Onana will join just one year after moving to Inter, having won the Coppa Italia and reaching the Champions League final in his sole season in Italy.
