Liverpool legend got so ‘annihilated’ drunk at FA Cup semi-final he set team-mate’s Wag’s hair on FIRE

A LIVERPOOL legend has revealed that he was once so “annihilated” that he almost set the hair of a team-mate’s Wag on fire.

Steve Nicol, now 61, won a host of honours throughout his 13 years as right-back for Liverpool following his move from Ayr United in 1981.

The former Scotland international right-back lifted the title four times, the European and League Cups plus the FA Cup on three occasions.

But he missed the 1990 FA Cup semi-final with Crystal Palace due to injury – but that did not stop him from travelling down with staff and the players’ families to watch his pals in action.

Nicol has revealed that trip involved him drinking on the coach from 10am as the day ultimately ended in a shock defeat for Liverpool.

Afterwards, they all boarded the bus back up to Merseyside for what then boss Kenny Dalglish had intended to be a celebration at a Chinese restaurant.

Unfortunately, Nicol says he was so drunk that he ended up causing chaos at the bash and it led to him terrifying one of his fellow star’s partners.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, the ex-Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday defender explained: “I was absolutely annihilated. It actually worked out because everybody was devastated – but I was so drunk it loosened up the mood a little bit.

“We’re sitting having a meal and Gary Ablett’s wife Debbie was sat next to me with the big lion’s mane hair – it was like a big bush on top of her head.

“I’m sitting smoking and looking at it, and for some reason I’m thinking ‘I wonder what would happen if I lit that on fire’.

“I put my lighter next to her rather large mop and WOOOOOOFFFFF!!!”

Nicol then added that he ended up repeatedly bashing Debbie on the head as he tried to put out the flames.

The 1988/89 Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year said: “Gary was screaming ‘What are you doing?!’ and putting his jacket on her head.

“It seemed like a good idea at the time. It wasn’t one of the smartest things in the world.”

Nicol did fortunately go on to reveal that Debbie was not harmed in the incident, though he admitted that her hair “might have taken a few years” to recover.
