Tottenham hand Man Utd transfer boost as they ‘agree £17m deal’ but fans slam ‘underwhelming’ signing

TOTTENHAM have reached a verbal agreement with Empoli to sign goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for £17.2million, according to reports.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are chasing a new goalkeeper this summer, with long-term No1 Hugo Lloris expected to leave.

Spurs reportedly agreed terms with Brentford stopper David Raya earlier this month.

But with the Bees refusing to budge from their £40m valuation, Tottenham are exploring other targets.

According to DiMarzio, the North Londoners have verbally agreed a £17.2m fee, with a formal bid imminent.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano adds that Vicario has agreed terms on a five-year contract with Spurs.

The 26-year-old joined Empoli from Cagliari, initially on loan, in 2021 – and has gone on to make 71 appearances for the Serie A side.

His impressive form earned him a maiden Italy call-up last September, although he is yet to be capped by the Azzurri.

Should Spurs get a deal over the line, Manchester United could go on to move for Raya.

The Red Devils are focusing on other priorities at present, but could reportedly swoop for the Spaniard later in the window, should he still be at Brentford.

United stopper David de Gea could still sign a new contract at Old Trafford, but has not received assurances that he will remain No1.

Despite Vicario’s impressive displays in Serie A, some Spurs fans have been left feeling let down.

One whinged: “how underwhelming, cheapest option like always.”

While a second moaned: “Fading further and further into obscurity this club is.”

Another dramatically proclaimed: “Inexcusable.”
