Souness completed the feat in aid of Debra, a charity supporting those suffering from the rare skin disease Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).

The condition causes the skin to blister and causes those affected to suffer a great deal of pain.

He had been inspired to attempt the 21-mile swim after meeting 14-year-old Isla Grist, who suffers from EB.

An emotional Souness revealed Ferguson’s touching donation on Tuesday.

He told talkSPORT: “I hope I don’t embarrass him by saying this, but Alex Ferguson donated £20,000 after he quizzed me on it for half an hour.

“He’s got a heart of gold, that man. You have to search for it, but it’s there!”

Souness successfully completed the challenge in 12 hours and 17 minutes alongside five friends, which included Isla’s dad Andy.

The 70-year-old is already looking to raise more money for Debra by completing another challenge.

He added: “The North Pole, something around the Atlantic, something like that. I’m in this now, I’m in this for the long-haul.”

Souness’ charity haul comes after he left Sky Sports at the end of the season, having appeared as a pundit for the broadcaster for 15 years.
