Reading face another huge points deduction after crisis club are hit by new financial charges

READING are facing another potential points deduction after a fresh charge from the English Football League.

The Royals were docked six points back in April after admitting their failure to comply with budget restrictions.

And that ultimately played a huge role in their relegation from the Championship last season.

They finished 22nd in the second tier, five points behind Cardiff City.

Now Reading, who are yet to appoint a full-time replacement as manager after axing Paul Ince, are preparing for life in League One.

However, they could be starting the campaign at a huge disadvantage with another point deduction following the EFL’s latest announcement.

The governing body has charged them with multiple breaches of its regulations relating to the club’s failure to pay its players’ wages on three occasions last season.

A statement read: “The charges relate to the club failing to meet their obligations to pay its players’ wages on time and in full on or around 31 October 2022, 30 November 2022 and 28 April 2023.

“Yongge Dai, the club’s owner, has also been charged with causing the club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the club.”

The EFL have said that Reading and Dai have until June 29 to respond to the charges.

Meanwhile, their wait to appoint a new manager looks set to go on.

Chris Wilder, who had a short stint at Watford towards the end of last season, looked set to take over.

But both parties decided to delay talks and now reports are claiming that each respective side have opted to end the negotiations.

Reading will discover who they will kick-off the League One campaign against next Thursday when the EFL release their fixture list.
