I’m a makeup artist – the lippy mistakes I see all the time that makes you look old & how to avoid it

IT’S NO secret that the right makeup can knock years off your look.

But it turns out loads of people make the same mistakes that are actually making them look older, and they’re all to do with your lipstick.

Since our lips lose pigmentation and can even appear thinner as we get older, it’s important to change the way we apply makeup.

What might’ve once made our lips look lush and kissable can have the complete opposite effect as we age.

Makeup artist Ariane Poole revealed to Sixty And Me on YouTube that there are a few easy ways to update the way you apply lipstick that will make all the difference.

Fist of all, although you might’ve loved a dark shade of lippy in your twenties it’s only going to make your lips look thinner the older you get.

Opting for a lighter more natural shade is generally more flattering and will make your lips appear larger and more youthful.

Ariane suggested using a lipliner for a more defined, fuller look.

“I do a natural nude lip line on the edge or outer edge, it’s still on the lips so it’s not like a clown’s mouth,” she explained.

Using a liner that’s darker than your lipstick, or the natural shade of your lips can make your lips look thinner.

Likewise, applying the liner on the inner edge, rather than the outer edge can have the same affect.

“If you do it on the outside you can suddenly look like you’ve had a little plumping,” she added.

Another mistake people often make is applying lipstick and lipliner and calling it a day, but there’s one more step that make make a huge difference.

According to the pro, a dab of highlighter can make your lips look loads more full.

She recommended adding a swipe of a highlighter to the cupid’s bow to create the illusion of lifted lips.

You can even take it one step further and apply a small amount under your bottom lip for an extra pouty look.

That said, going overboard with highlighter can have to complete opposite effect, so remember less is more in this case.

Viewers loved the simple advice too, one said: “Thanks for the tips. I definitely like the more natural look.”
