Mitch Brown, who used to fly for Delta Airlines, told Travel + Leisure why he always packs a headtorch.
He said: “I started traveling with a headlamp sometime in the last 20 years or so.”
Mitch explained it was because they had to have their own backup light sources as pilots in case they lost power in the cockpit.
While he thankfully never needed it in an emergency situation, he said it has come in useful over the years.
He said: “Hotel lighting isn’t always as easy to navigate, like how the lights by the bed are either just out of reach or aren’t easy to switch on or off in the middle of the night.
“I’ve been thankful to have a headlamp more times than I can count, and it’s proven useful for big events like power outages or just walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night.”
He also praised it for being useful during hikes, while some waterproof ones are ideal too in case your bag leaks.
The cheapest one we can find is on Amazon for £5.99, called the Xndryan Head Torch here.
Battery operated, the headtorch also has three settings – high, low and flashing, with the latter ideal for emergencies.
It’s had hundreds of good reviews, with one saying: “It’s a lightweight comfortable lamp that does its job brilliantly.”
Another simply said: “Simple and effective.”
However, the one Mitch himself approves of is the Petzl ARIA headlamp, costing £49 and is both waterproof and dustproof.
We’ve rounded up some of the best headtorches on the market right now.
Here are some other travel items holidaymakers swear by, including a £9 bag.
