West Ham players headed over to the section of the crowd where the objects had been thrown from and implored them to stop.
Following the incident, a stadium announcement said: “This is an important security announcement — stop throwing objects onto the field.
“Please respect the players and the officials. Thank you.”
Reacting to the shocking incident one fan said: “There’s a lot of blood coming out of that gash on Biraghi’s head, I expect lifetime bans from all football in Europe for those West Ham supporters!!!”
A second declared: “Disgusting behaviour.”
A third added: “Should be a season ban. Same for Roma after last week until fan behaviour improves.”
“Completely unacceptable,” typed a fourth.
The escalation comes after plastic cups were thrown at fellow Fiorentina star Nicolas Gonzalez.
