Celine Dion cancels world tour dates ‘with tremendous disappointment’ due to stiff person syndrome

Singer Celine Dion has announced “with tremendous disappointment” the cancellation of her “Courage” world tour.

Posting to Instagram with a screenshot of the cancelled dates in Europe from 2023 through to 2024, the songstress shares that she is “so sorry to disappoint all of you once again. I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%”.

“It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again. I want you all to know, I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!”

The screenshot elaborates that the reason Dion, 55, decided to cancel her tour is due to her battle with stiff-person syndrome, which she revealed she was first diagnosed with in December last year.

Stiff person syndrome is described as a very rare neurological disorder that affects the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of the disorder can include “extreme muscle stiffness, rigidity and painful spasms in the trunk and limbs, severely impairing mobility”.

“As the world emerged from the pandemic, Celine has continued to be treated for a diagnosed medical condition that prevents her from performing. Celine is working hard on her recovery, but at this time is unable to successfully prepare for and perform the remainder of the tour,” read the notice.

This is not the first time the My Heart Will Go On singer has had to cancel her tour dates, In 2021, she was forced to cancel 16 remaining shows of the North American leg of her “Courage” world tour, after having performed 52 of them before the pandemic.

At the time, she wrote on Instagram: “I was really hoping that I’d be good to go by now, but I suppose I just have to be more patient and follow the regimen that my doctors are prescribing.

“There’s a lot of organising and preparation that goes into our shows, and so we have to make decisions today which will affect the plans two months down the road.

“I’ll be so glad to get back to full health, as well as all of us getting past this pandemic, and I can’t wait to be back on stage again.”

In the meantime, she acted in her first motion picture, Love Again, which co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan.

The film is currently available to watch in theatres.
