The popular British snack that is now banned in Spain

BRITS heading to Spain this summer can no longer take a popular snack with them into the country.

Since the UK left the EU, new rules are in place for taking food to Spain.

This includes any animal products which fall under two categories – meat and dairy items.

Obvious items such as sausages, ham and cheese are banned, but the ban extends to items that use meat and dairy products as part of their ingredients.

Holidaymakers will easily fall victim to this if they buy food at the airport, and take it with them into the country.

So if you are planning to buy something like a ham and cheese sandwich – make sure you eat it on the plane, or throw it out before arrival.

There are other items that could get you in trouble too.

Cakes contain fresh cream – also a dairy product – and some sweets are made with gelatine – an animal product.

English cheeses like Cornish brie and Wensleydale, as well as clotted cream fudge are all no-nos as well.

Other unusual food items that are banned include a jar of Bovril because it contains gelatine, as well as mince pies and Christmas puddings.

One dairy product that is still allowed is baby milk.

Powdered baby milk is still allowed into Spain as long as it is sealed and in its original packaging.

The UK Foreign Office states: ” You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries.”

“There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food required for medical reasons.”

Here are some other Spain laws you could be breaking while on holiday.

When it comes to travelling to Europe, there are restrictions on how much booze you can take too.

There are now restrictions on booze and cigarette limits.

You can only take up to four litres of spirits, 42 litres of beer and 18 litres of wine.

And cigarettes are limited to 200.
