Turner, who earned the nickname Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll thanks to her string of hit songs during her long career, first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue.

The American-born rocker then launched a wildly successful solo career, producing hits such as The Best, Nutbush City Limits and River Deep.

Turner suffered multiple tragedies in her life after losing both of her sons.

Her second-born son Ronnie Turner died aged 62 in December 2022 while her eldest son, Raymond Craig Turner, died age 59 in 2018.

Turner’s ex-husband Ike – the father of Ronnie – died of a drug overdose in 2007.

The iconic musician leaves behind her second husband, Erwin Bach, whom she married in 2013 after a 27-year relationship.

Turner also battled ill health for much of the latter years of her life.

In 2016, she suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. Her kidneys soon began to fail and her health continued to decline.

“I couldn’t eat. I was surviving but not living. I began to think about death,” the singer wrote in her 2018 autobiography Tina Turner: My Love Story.

At 77, Turner was unlikely to receive an organ donation and would have to undergo the painful process of dialysis instead. It was so bad, she began to consider assisted suicide.

However, Bach came to her rescue and donated one of his kidneys to save his wife.

“He said he didn’t want another woman, or another life,” Turner recalled in her memoir. “He said he wanted to give me one of his kidneys.”

The couple underwent transplant surgery in 2017, and it was successful, giving the couple an extra few years together.

Turner’s death comes as her life story is playing out on stages across Australia in the Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.
