In a video on TikTok, Nicky Kelvin, from The Points Guy UK explained how he still finds cheap flights.

He said: “They say [newspapers] the era of £10 flights is dead. Well you can still fly for cheap, here are six ways to keep your flight prices down.”

1. Flexibility

Nicky said: “I love using Google Flights to do super flexible searches.

“You can put in the dates you’re able to fly and the amount of time you want to go away for and this will find the cheapest flights within those parameters.”

2. Price Alerts

In the same video, Nicky revealed that he’d also set up price alerts before booking his flights.

Price alerts notify customers when flight prices are at their lowest so they can be booked.

For example, Nicky used the “track prices” option on Google Flights to make sure he knows when his desired flights are at their lowest.

3. Stopovers

While flying direct may be easier, choosing a route with a layover can be cheaper.

Nicky added: “[You should] think about stopovers. On these dates [early June], flying from London to LA direct costs £1,745.

“But on the same dates, the same destination with a stop costs only £610.”

By adding in a stop at an additional airport, Nicky has managed to save over £1,000.

4. Mix and match airlines

Flying with the same airline will seem like the obvious option but picking different airlines could be cost-effective.

He added: “Mix and Match airlines on your outbound and return flights.

“Here there are flights to Tel Aviv outbound on Wizzair and inbound on easyJet, which can keep prices low.”

5. Check departure points

If you can be flexible with dates, try and be flexible with your choice of airport too.

Nicky added: “Check lots of different airports, both departure and arrival points if you can.

“Here I’ve searched Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, and Brussels – and this got me these super cheap fares out of Brussels to New York for just £345.”

6. Points and miles

Nicky’s final hack revolved around airline loyalty programmes like Avios.

Nicky said: “Finally don’t forget points and miles help to keep prices down, you can fly all around Europe for as little as 50p tax and Avios.”

He explained that there are lots of different programmes holidaymakers can use to rack up air miles.

One budget traveller on TikTok has revealed that he always books his flights through Google Flights for the best deals.

The traveller, known as ndainternet, has said that the search engine shows the cheapest airfares for several different destinations, allowing you to pick the cheapest one for a holiday.

And a money expert revealed how the day you book and the day you fly can impact how expensive your flights are.
