The £4 item that will change the way you travel

A FITNESS coach has revealed the £4 item she always packs in her bag when she goes abroad.

Keeping on top of fitness and exercise regimes when on holiday can be very difficult, but there’s some simple ways in which you can remain active.

Thea Hughes, a strength and lifestyle coach and owner of Max Effort Studio in Brooklyn, New York explained how she always packs a simple item that doesn’t take up much room in her bag, but keeps her active.

She told the Wall Street Journal that she relies on compact Resistance Bands, which she said are great for “strength training and stretching” and are “all you need to get a complete workout in”.

She said they allow you to “vary the difficulty of your exercises by varying the length of time you maintain tension”.

Thea isn’t the only person to take bands away with her either, with some people even suggesting they’re beneficial during flights.

Youtube fitness channel HIITBURN recommend using the bands while on planes to keep muscles well stretched and to increase blood flow.

In a video, one of their trainers Kelsey said: “There are some exercises that you can do on an aeroplane that will help really activate your muscles, help reduce anxiety and boredom and also help avoid health issues like blood clots.

“We’re going to be using a mini band that will really help activate those muscles.”

The bands can be found on Amazon from £3.99 for a set of five.

Using them to stretch on planes could help prevent deep vein thrombosis, for which is a serious consideration for people, particularly of a certain age or weight.

This occurs when you get a blood clot (a sticky mass of blood cells) in a vein that is deep below the skin.

It can be caused by sitting in the same position for too long, which is why passengers are urged to walk around the plane, or do small exercises with their feet to keep the blood moving.

Emirates flight attendant Lauren Guilfoyle recommends using the “alphabet technique” while sitting in your seat to increase movement.

She spoke to Reader’s Digest to explain how the technique worked.

She said: “Motion each letter of the alphabet with your foot to get the blood flowing and avoid ankle swelling.

“[These] circulatory exercises will keep your cheeks looking rosy and make you look more awake when you step off the plane.”

Meanwhile, another woman went to huge lengths to make a flight more comfortable – even shocking a flight attendant.

And a former flight attendant has revealed the best seat to book on a plane.
