But, car theft is also on the rise in the UK – with over 130,000 cars being stolen in 2022 – and it’s a problem that could leave you paying out to cover insurance excesses and other associated costs.

Experts at confused.com have analysed DVLA data to discover the most stolen car makes and models in the UK, and the biggest hotspots for theft.

A Range Rover Velar diesel model (specifically, the R-Dynamic HSE D180) is the most frequently stolen car in the UK, with 2,117 stolen per 100,000 registered in the UK last year.

Other Range Rover models dominate the list of the most stolen cars, accounting for six of the top ten.

These include the Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic Black P400e model, and the Sport SVR, with both seeing over 1,400 cars stolen per 100,000.

Lexus models also feature prominently, with two versions of the RX 450H taking third and fourth place, with 1,684 and 1,460 thefts per 100,000.

And Ford Fiestas are also popular targets, with the Zetec S Red (1,073 per 100,000) and Black (1,054 per 100,000) Editions occupying the eighth and ninth places.

The study also revealed that if your car has black paintwork the it’s more likely to be taken – with almost 18,000 being stolen in the last year.

Conversely, brighter colours such as pink and turquoise are some of the least popular with thieves.

Car experts also found that drivers in the Welsh area of Dyfed-Powys are the safest from vehicle theft, where just 22 cars per 100,000 are stolen.

But, people in the West Midlands are most likely to have their car stolen – with 251 thefts per 100,000.

This comes after a car expert revealed the three reasons why he would never buy a Tesla.
