Boots slashes Advantage card points from TODAY in huge loyalty scheme shake up – what it means for shoppers

BOOTS has made a huge change to its loyalty card scheme from today, here’s what it means for customers.

Advantage Card shoppers will get 25% less for every £1 they spend in store, earning 3p rather than 4p.

It comes as a number of retailers including Tesco and Sainsbury’s Bank, also cut the value of their loyalty card schemes.

But it isn’t all doom and gloom for Boots shoppers, as the health and beauty giant is to offers customers with an Advantage card 10% off on over 6,000 own-brand products.

The retailer previously said that over 70% of card holders typically have one in five items in their basket from own brand ranges.

The discount will be available online and in-store and it will be applied automatically at the checkout.

All products included in the offer will be highlighted for all shoppers to see.

In addition, an extra 1,000 products across Boots stores and online will come with the Advantage Points discount.

Specific groups of customers will also get additional benefits.

Over 60s will get eight points for every £1 spent on Boots’ own brand products while Boots Parenting Club members will receive eight points for every £1 spent on baby products.

Meanwhile, students can get an added 10% discount and Boots Opticians customers on a Contact Lens Rewards Plan will get an extra 10% off Boots own brand products.

Pete Markey, chief marketing officer at Boots said: “Customers want instant savings so we’ve expanded Price Advantage to a huge 1,000 lines each month, with savings on some of our big name and most popular products.

“And with more customers choosing our own label products, we’re also adding an always on, instant 10% off our Boots Brand range, giving Boots Advantage Card holders money off 1000s of quality products from our trusted Boots brand.”

Boots’ Advantage Card launched in 1997 and celebrated its 25th year in 2022.

Across its history, over 15million customers have used the loyalty scheme to get bonus points when they spend money online or in-store.

Over 50,000 customers who signed up to the scheme in 1997 were still using the card as of August 2022.

Last year, Boots launched Price Advantage which offers customers with a Boots Advantage card access to lower prices on different products, much like the Tesco Clubcard.

In recent months, Boots expanded its own brand range to offer 6,000 products across baby, health and beauty departments.

Boots operates over 2,200 stores across the UK and employs 51,000 members of staff.

What other retailers run reward schemes?

Boots isn’t the only retailer that runs reward schemes to entice customers in.

Tesco’s Clubcard is popular among its customer base, offering them exclusive prices on a number of products.

But in March, Tesco announced it is to cut the value of its Clubcard rewards scheme.

The supermarket giant said its Clubcard points will be worth twice their value when customers cash them in, rather than three times as they are now, from June 14.

Sainsbury’s customers can use their Nectar card to collect points, either on a smartphone app, or with a physical card to collect and spend points.

You get a minimum of one point per £1 in stores and online at Sainsbury’s, plus bonus points are available on the Nectar app, via paper coupons at checkouts, or sent in the post. 

The supermarket also launched “Nectar Prices”, which gives members discounts on over 300 items in store and online, with selected products at 5%.
