And he had to watch on from the garage as Sergio Perez secured pole position for tomorrow’s race.
Charles Leclerc spun out and crashed into the barriers for the second time and that brought qualifying to a premature end – with Max Verstappen unable to register a lap time in Q3.
It means the reigning world champion will start ninth on the grid on a track that is difficult to overtake on.
