Varney, who spent the season on loan at Blackpool in their only year in the Prem, recalled the story during an appearance on the Undr The Cosh podcast.
The former winger explained how his family were turfed out of their usual seats to make way for William and his pals.
Varney said: “We’ve got Wolves at home and before the game my wife rang me, ‘babe the usual spot at the players’ lounge we haven’t got today because Prince William’s on a stag do in Blackpool’.
“I swear, I said ‘where’s he going I’m coming’.
“So I looked up and they’re all sat in that corner. The kids and the missus are up near the away fans.”
Varney did not let the pre-match distraction affect his game however as he opened the scoring in the third minute with a sublime strike.
He chested the ball down before firing into the back of the net from a difficult angle, and created a lasting memory for the Prince.
Blackpool won the game 2-1 and Varney, 40, was later presented with the Man of the Match award by William and embarrassed himself in response.

He added: “After the game I’ve walked to the top of the stairs to get the Man of the Match award and he’s there.
“So I didn’t know what to do I was curtsying I was bowing, I didn’t know what to do.
“He said it would live long in the memory and I think it was close to the wedding so I asked for an invite.
“I got a letter saying it was a great weekend and will live long in his memory.”
