The Yorkshire town has been a magnet for holidaymakers from all over the country ever since spa waters were discovered there in the 17th century.

It was also named recently as one of the top places in the UK to retire to thanks to its “affordable” house prices.

The town also has good transport links, making it easily accessible to visitors.

As well as a long history Scarborough also boasts some beautiful views along with not one but two sandy beaches.

Scarborough’s North Bay is an attraction for water sport enthusiasts and also a firm favourite for anyone who enjoys rock-pooling.

It was awarded the prestigious Blue Flag status last year.

The Blue Flag award is the gold standard for beaches which looks at water quality, safety and the facilities provided.

If that wasn’t enough, the town also boasts a castle which dates back to the 12th century.

Visitors can also take a ride on the historic Scarborough Spa Express or even go whale watching.

Other attractions include going on a tour of the harbour, its Rotunda Museum, the Cliff Bridge and the Scarborough Pier Lighthouse.

Outside the Grand Hotel in the town there is a blue plaque marking where Anne Bronte died in 1849 and she is buried in the graveyard of St Mary’s church next to the castle.

And no visit to the seaside would be complete without tucking into a portion of fish and chips.

According to Airbnb, Scarborough beat off Belfast, Peak Forest, Weymouth, Tenby, Windermere, Ambleside, Blackpool, Aviemore and Keswick to claim the top spot.
