Lampard qualified for the Champions League in his first full season in charge

It is understood he will oversee training before the club announce his appointment until the end of the season, report The Times.

Lampard was at Stamford Bridge for the 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday and he is expected to be on the touchline for Chelsea’s visit to Wolves on Saturday.

Former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole and Joe Edwards are also set to arrive in a coaching capacity – the pair worked with Lampard at Everton.

Lampard’s appointment gives Chelsea time to conduct a thorough search for their next permanent manager.

Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann are believed to be the frontrunners after the club made contact with the pair.

Former Spain boss Enrique arrived in London yesterday for talks and he is believed to be keen on the job.

But Chelsea have several candidates in mind and Todd Boehly could take his time having already sacked two managers in his short reign.

Fulham manager Marco Silva and ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino are also in the frame for the job.
