Despite feeling unwell the night before, Lineker lined up for Bobby Robson’s men – and even got off to the perfect start by scoring after nine minutes.

By the second-half, however, he found himself in a spot of bother.

Recounting what happened to pals Micah Richards and Alan Shearer on Match of the Day: Top 10, the 62-year-old said: “I’d not been very well the night before.

“But I didn’t tell anyone because I wanted to play. Fifteen minutes in the second half I start cramping and I think “oh christ I’m in a s*** load of pain here.”

He then went on: “The ball goes out on their left hand side and I kind of did a lunge at it and as I did that I kind of relaxed.

“And it’s just gone boof and I’ve gone “Oh my God”. And I’m sat there on the ground and it’s all there.”

Richards, 34, joked that this was the “best story” Lineker had ever told, with the former striker then hitting back: “Shut up!

“You can see me look up and Gary Stevens comes over and I remember him going ‘Links what’s wrong’.

“And I went ‘I’ve s*** myself’. I felt like crying. Thank God we had the dark blue shorts on and not the white ones.”

Lineker, replaced by Steve Bull not long after his accident, soon saw matters get even worse – with Ireland equalising via his former Everton team-mate Kevin Sheedy on 73 minutes.

He went on to add: “It was horrible at the time but it’s obviously funny now.”

Lineker scored four goals at the tournament, including the equaliser against West Germany in the semi-finals.

The Three Lions would go out on penalties, however, with the Germans going on to win the competition.
