Jeremy Renner gives emotion-charged first interview after snow plough accident: ‘I’d do it again’

Jeremy Renner has given his first interview since a New Year’s Day snow plough accident left him fighting for life.

A trailer was released on Wednesday (Thursday morning AEDT) ahead of the Marvel star’s special one-on-one with Diane Sawyer for ABC America’s 20/20, which airs in the US next week.

Titled Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview — A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph, it includes the actor’s nephew, whose life the movie superhero saved before he was crushed by the 6.35-tonne snowcat.

“Yeah, I’d do it again, cause it was going right at my nephew,” Renner tells Sawyer defiantly.

Chilling emergency services calls are heard in the trailer with audible groans coming from Renner and a voiceover saying, “this is the sound of someone that was dying”.

Describing a pool of blood around his uncle’s head, Renner’s nephew tells Sawyer: ”I ran up to him and I didn’t think he was alive”.

Renner says he remembers the pain that came from being crushed by the machinery and breaking 30 bones in his body.

“Oh, all of it, yeah, I was awake through every moment,” the Avengers star says.

The actor became visibly emotional while reflecting on the moment in hospital he signed “I’m sorry” to members of his family as he fought for his life.

The Hawkeye actor is now recovering at home, after an 18-day stay in hospital in January, and is seen using a wheelchair and walker in the 20/20 preview.

Renner’s been keeping fans across his recovery in social media posts and tells Sawyer he hopes to get back into the action scenes soon.

“I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience but I’ve been refuelled and refilled with love and titanium.”

Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview — A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph airs in the US Thursday, April 6 at 10pm ET (midday Friday, April 7 AEST).
