Scott McTominay emotional after Spain heroics as Scotland hero hails team-mates for ‘creating legacy’

SCOTT McTOMINAY hailed his Scotland pals for helping him create history at Hampden.

The Manchester United midfielder was the man who scored both goals just days after already netting a double in their opening match against Cyprus.

His performance at the weekend earned him a starting spot against Spain and he didn’t let Clarke down after the boss put his faith in him.

McTominay’s two goals, which bagged Scotland a massive three points, have fired Scotland to the top of Group A and five points clear of Norway and Georgia.

And speaking after the match, McTominay said: “I have never seen anything like this, it’s incredible.

“That’s what the manager said in his talk before we got on the bus – he said this was a chance to create your own legacy as a Scotland player.

“These are the nights that in 20 or 30 years, people remember.

“They will look back and say, ‘I was there’ or they had their children with them.

“That’s what it’s all about. The fans are amazing at Hampden and we can’t thank them enough.

“We knew they would have a lot of the ball and that we would have to be clinical when had our chances.

“That’s what happened.

“We had a few chances to really hurt them but we got the win.

“As a kid I was an attacking midfielder but then I stretched and got too big for that position!

“I like to get in the box and I know I can add more goals and assists to my game, in the last two games I have done that.

“Everyone was making the game slow and diving around. It wasn’t a clean game in that everyone was making the most of everything.

“It was a difficult night to be a ref but sometimes you just have to do that.

“We were keeping a hold of the lead and it has to be that way sometimes.”

Watford defender Ryan Porteous was again immense at the back as helped Scotland keep a clean sheet.

The former Hibs stopper has yet to concede a goal in three caps and revealed it was a surreal Hampden experience.

Porteous said: “It was excellent to be part of that as we knew it had been a long time since we beat Spain.

“We wanted to end that record as we have heard a lot of people talk about it.

“Hopefully they will now be talking about this result in the future.

“It’s two results and we have to kick on now. We can’t take this for granted.

“It was a tough game and there was a lot going on out there.

“It was always apparent from the outset that we would have to be on our game, as you need to limit the amount of time top players get on the ball.

“We tracked runs well, we put our bodies on the line and all in all, it was a special night for us.

“The feeling at the end was amazing and every time I play for Scotland, it just feels better and better.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere, the fans were magnificent and really pushed us on.”

Porteous has been a dependable presence for Scotland in his three caps and he thanked Clarke for showing faith in him.

He said: “The manager picked me when some people thought otherwise.

“He stuck by me, he showed a lot of faith in me and I am really grateful for the chance.

“It’s been a good start to the group, getting six points out of six, but we can’t get carried away.

“We have a big summer coming up and we need to replicate those performances in June.”
