Nina, 42, and co-host Jon Kay, 53, began Wednesday’s instalment of BBC Breakfast by discussing the headlines that have hit the news over the past 24 hours.

One of those was how Matt Lucas, 48, dramatically quit Bake Off last night, saying it “became clear” he could no longer host the Channel 4 show.

As they showed clips of the TV star digging into some tasty treats on the show, Nina made it clear she would be up for nabbing the new role for herself.

BBC Breakfast showed some clips of Matt on the show tasting the tasty treats that the contestants had baked.

Nina confessed: “I am always available for tasting cake…

“Just the cake eating bit.”

Jon replied: “Not so much the work bit, just the eating bit?”

“No just the eating,” Nina confirmed.

Matt took joined GBBO in 2020 to present the programme alongside Noel Fielding.

He took over the role from Sandi Toksvig, who had been on the show since 2017.

The Fantasy Football League presenter announced the news on Twitter.

Matt tweeted: “Farewell Bake Off! It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers.

“But it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

“So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.

“I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent.

“I wish whoever takes over the very best and I can’t wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!”
