Sky customers warned popular TV service is shutting down – but there’s a free alternative

SKY has revealed it is winding down one of its most popular TV apps.

The Sky+ app will no longer be supported by the end of May, meaning you won’t be able to control your Sky+ HD box from a mobile much longer.

It comes as more people go for newer Sky platforms like Sky Q, Sky Glass and Sky Stream instead which doesn’t work with the Sky+ app.

The broadcaster is removing the app from the iOS and Android app stores on March 30 – though you will still be able to use it if you’ve already got it downloaded on your device.

But things will begin to stop working.

Channel Favourites will no longer be available in the app and your list of Favourites on the app’s TV guide won’t be shown anymore either.

After May 31 Sky will stop providing anymore updates, so anything that breaks will stay broken.

Features like Send to TV and app remote control tools will continue to function unofficially for the foreseeable future.

“We always aim to support the most up-to-date, secure and high-performing technology,” Sky said.

“The age of the Sky+ app on iOS and Android means that the services used are out of date and cannot be continued or improved in the existing app.”

Sky is urging affected customers to use the Sky Go app instead.

Sky Go has been around for a while now, allowing people to watch content on their phones, tablets and even games consoles.

The company has reminded Sky+ users that Sky Go is free for them as part of their TV subscription.

A link will appear at the top of the Sky+ app to take them straight to Sky Go.

However, Sky Go doesn’t act as a replacement remote for your TV so it’s farewell for some features forever.
