Radio host Dave Hughes shares ‘near death’ experience

Aussie comedian and radio host Dave Hughes has shared a recent ‘near-death’ experience with his co-hosts on 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin show.

Hughes, who often goes by ‘Hughesy’, explained to his colleagues Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan how the solo plane trip he’d taken over the weekend could’ve ended very differently.

While in ‘outback’ South Australia, the 52-year-old was flying after a gig when he ‘nearly died’.

“I nearly died in a light plane,” he said. “Just me and the pilot.”

Hughesy played a clip from his live stream of the plane ride. He was seated next to the pilot at the time.

In the audio clip, you can hear Hughesy call out, ‘woah’.

“The ‘woah’ was me after a bird flew straight at us and missed us my millimetres. The pilot said ‘Lucky, if that bird had of hit us that bird would have taken us down’. I was millimetres away from dying because of a bird,” he told his co-hosts.

The show’s Instagram page shared a snippet of the scary incident.

The video shows the bird flying past in the top right hand corner of the shot.

The trio discussed how birds actually affect planes and the extensive damage they can cause.

According to Hughesy, “Birds are the worst things for planes.”

“The issue is when it goes into the engine,” Molan, whose brother is a pilot, said. “I think that’s the real danger like with the big planes I mean smaller planes just hitting one could send you off course and cause some damage but the bigger planes, it’s more if it gets into the engine.”
