She said: “I was so stunned I don’t know what I did.

“I’m excited, happy, shocked, stunned, but I feel great.”

Ms Sample won the top prize of $5 million (£4.1m) on a scratch card.

A spokesman for Virginia Lottery said: ” If you ask Eunice Sample how she reacted when she realised that the Virginia Lottery ticket in her hand was worth $5 million, she won’t be able to tell you.”

Ms Sample was given the option of either receiving her winnings in installments over a 30-year period, or getting it all in one go.

She chose to cash in on her windfall straight away, and was pictured beaming with her giant cheque.

It comes after a woman who bought a lottery ticket after a spooky inner voice told her to ended up winning £820,000.

Wendy Hester – from North Carolina – said she was grocery shopping when she was stopped in her tracks by the voice.

“Something just told me to buy it, so I did. It was just meant to be, I think,” she said.

Meanwhile, a mum-of-four scooped a jackpot lottery prize after tripling her winnings in a special prize drop.

Rajeeva Tharmalingam, 37, from Ontario was playing Plinko Lottery when she suddenly discovered she had won £82,500, but her winnings just kept on coming.

Elsewhere, three Welsh pals managed to win £1million after starting a lottery syndicate during their apprenticeships.
