Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard ‘one of two candidates’ for manager job

STEVEN GERRARD is reportedly high on one club’s shortlist as they look to appoint their new manager.

The former Rangers boss, who has been out of a job since he was sacked by Aston Villa last October, has been tipped with several managerial roles since he was shown the door at the Premier League club.

Recently, he has been linked with the vacant England under-21 gig, but finances could prove to be a stumbling block.

Poland were interested in making him their new head coach too and tabled an offer for him, but then looked elsewhere as they preferred to appoint someone with more international experience instead.

Former Portugal and Greece boss Fernando Santos took over the position in January.

But it’s not just international roles the former Rangers gaffer has been linked with.

He has been touted for Leeds United, Southampton and Turkish side Trabzonspor as well.

The Elland Road club have since appointed Javi Garcia following Jesse Marsch departure, whilst Southampton opted for Ruben Nelles.

But Gerrard is still in the pipeline for Trabzonspor.

The Turkish giants held talks with the Liverpool and England legend last week after sacking Abdullah Avci two months ago.

Gerrard flew to Instanbul to have discussions with the club after realising the boss is ready to return into management after taking months out following his departure from Aston Villa.

And Gerrard remains a high target for the club as reports from Turkey now claim he is one of two managers considered for the position.

It’s suggested that they are big admirers of the former Gers boss and have whittled down their options as they aim to close in on their next appointment.

İlhan Palut, who is the manager of Super Lig rivals Konyaspor, is the other boss they are interested in.

Gerrard admitted earlier this year that he was starting to miss the buzz of being a football manager, but it may not be long until he’s back in the dugout now.
