UK cities with the worst drivers revealed – is your region on the list?

THE British cities with the worst drivers have been revealed – find out where your region ranks.

Motorists were given a rating based on fatal, serious and slight traffic accidents over a two year period.

This is Money revealed the worst five cities for driving, following a study.

It also takes into account driving test pass rates and those who successfully acquired their license first time or with no faults since April 2022. 

The traffic accident data between 2020 and 2021 highlights which cities have strong drivers behind the wheel – and which are falling further behind.

A spokesman for One Sure Insurance – who collated the data – said: “On average someone is injured or killed on roads in the UK every 16 minutes.

“The majority of these accidents are caused by speeding. Bad driving can lead to preventable accidents, death and damage that could cost you.”

So where does your city rank on the list?

Here are the five worst cities for drivers in the UK…

1. Leeds 

Right at the top of the list is Leeds.

With a population of 455,123, there were 0.64 fatal accidents per 10,000 people, while pass rates are as low as 41.2 per cent.

There were also 52.10 serious and slight accidents per 10,000.

2. Plymouth 

Pass rates are even lower in Plymouth, with only 37.9 per cent successful on average.

But drivers in this city rank higher than Leeds as they have fewer fatal, serious and slight accidents.

3. Birmingham 

Coming up next is Birmingham, with 0.37 per 10,000 fatal accidents and 39.65 per 10,000 serious and slight accidents.

Driving test pass rates are low at 42.5 per cent.

4. Cambridge 

Cambridge has one of the highest rankings for fatal accidents (3.47 per 10,000), while there were 118.28 per 10,000 serious and slight accidents. 

However, they do have a redeeming feature – more than half (50.1 per cent) of drivers pass their tests while 47.3 per cent succeed first time. 

5. Doncaster  

Doncaster comes in behind Cambridge to take the fifth spot. They had 0.70 fatal accidents per 10,000, while driving pass rates are at 41.4 per cent.

Wrexham, Oxford, Lichfield, Southampton and Wolverhampton are the other regions which fill up the spots in top 10 cities with the worst drivers.

Top tips for driving safely

As the UK is set to face cold weather, with weather warnings issued across the country, it is important to take care when driving.

Winter driving requires motorists to be more alert and are at greater risk of fines and accidents.

The most important tip to keep front of mind when faced with snow or ice is to allow sufficient time for your journey so you can make sure to drive safely.

Always maintain a good distance from the vehicle in front of you, especially when driving in the rain, as it can take longer to stop should you need to.

And make sure you are well acquainted with the Highway Code and any key changes to it.
