The record-equalling defeat saw the away side concede six goals in a barely believable second-half.

Supporters could be seen clapping the players who came over after the game which is a surprise reaction given the scoreline.

United assistant coach Steve McClaren was among those ushering players to face the away end at full-time before the shell-shocked players headed to the dressing room.

While Raphael Varane took a more forceful approach and was caught on camera shouting at his teammates to go and clap the fans.

But those who did not leave early in the away end responded positively despite United’s utter capitulation in the second 45.

Their response reflects the positive mood that had gripped the club before this extraordinary defeat.

It was only seven days before that United won their first trophy under Erik ten Hag and there were whispers of the quadruple.
