The exact number of steps needed to burn off the calories in just one pint of cider or a glass of red wine revealed

THE calories in one pint of cider or a glass of red wine can take more than 5,000 steps to walk off, research has found.

A pint of cider contains 240 calories, with experts working out it would take 5,670 steps — a 51-minute walk.

And a 250ml glass of red wine contains 225 calories — which is around 5,575 steps or 49 minutes of walking.

Guinness needs a 46-minute hike, with around 5,480 steps to burn off its 210 calories, while a 200- calorie pint of lager needs about 5,385 steps over 43 minutes.

At the other end of the scale, the research by mobile app Weward found that a shot of Jack Daniel’s has 60 calories and needs a 12-minute amble, with around 1,680 steps to burn it off.

A 125ml, 90-calorie glass of champers needs 2,520 over 19 minutes, and a gin and tonic needs 2,650 steps in 21 minutes to work off its 100 calories.

Electrical engineer Eric Barrowman, 47, of Eastcote, North West London, said: “My local’s a one-minute walk.

“I guess I should find a pub a bit further away,”

The electrical engineer said: “I do love a good walk before a trip to the pub, but my local is just opposite me, a one-minute walk, if that.”

He admitted: “I’m a creature of habit.”
