Range Rover owners in London struggle to get insurance as luxury motor is one of most nicked in Britain

RANGE Rover owners in London are struggling to get insurance because the posh SUV is so commonly stolen.

Even manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has stopped offering cover.

As Range Rover owners in London struggle to get insurance cover, the DVLA said 5,200 of the posh SUVs were stolen last year, mostly in the capital

The news comes after figures revealed the car — with new models costing from £34,000 to more than £170,000 — is the second most nicked in Britain.

The DVLA said 5,200 Range Rovers were stolen last year, mostly in the capital.

Meanwhile, separate research from Tracker Network UK found the Range Rover Sport was the most stolen and recovered car.

Insurers hit by mounting claims have either stopped covering London-registered models or have increased premiums to around £40,000 a year.

Neil Thomas, director of investigation services at tracking company AX, said: “The problem for Range Rovers is not their security — it’s their huge popularity here and abroad.

“Thieves know they can dispose of one very easily and for a good price so will invest in the technology they need to steal them.”

Jaguar Land Rover said it was talking to insurers about how it is improving security.

It added: “We recommend clients use all available measures to protect their vehicle, including activating our Remote app and its suite of security features including Guardian Mode, which monitors the vehicle and provides an alert if the car has been unlocked.”

The Alliance of British Insurers have been contacted for comment.
