To celebrate its first birthday, the store has registered to get official “tourist” status.

This would mean getting an official brown tourist sign on the road directing people to Poundland, which is managed by Highways England.

Colin Smith, Poundland’s North East regional manager told local media: “The store has been a massive success over its first year and our biggest Poundland deserves a big birthday present.

“We can think of no better way to celebrate our first birthday than applying for an official brown tourist sign.”

A spokesperson added: “In fact, get a taxi from Thornaby Station to the store and it’s likely your cab driver will proudly tell you it’s Britain’s biggest Poundland.

If it does become a tourist attraction, it will join others such as the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) and Butterfly World

The Poundland store is a whopping 19,000 square feet – three times larger than the average shop.

It is set across two floors, with an escalator and lift.

Inside is a huge home section and  PEP&CO clothing department, which includes changing rooms.

Not only does it have a wide selection of snacks, tech, booze, and toys it also has a pretty extensive frozen range as well.

There is a large range of makeup, food-to-go and kitchen appliances too.

And when you leave there are proper, supermarket-style checkouts, which makes for a much slicker exit.

Here are some other weird tourists attractions you can visit in the UK.

Some of the strangest include a car park tunnel at Sainsbury’s and a hole in the wall.

And Sun Online Travel recently went to the biggest Wetherspoons in the world – here is what you can expect.
