Warning for millions of Call of Duty fans – you may be at risk

POPULAR shooting game Call of Duty has finally made it’s way to iPhones, but there’s a catch.

Activision, the company which owns the game, suffered a data breach just months ago.

The company confirmed that it experienced a breach in early December last year.

Hackers gained access to the company’s internal systems by tricking an employee with a phishing text.

A phishing attack is when scammers try draw out personal or financial details from their victims while pretending to be someone they’re not, such as a bank representative.

The hacked employee was reportedly working in the Human Resources department and had access to sensitive employee data, according to video game publication Insider Gaming.

Activision has said that the incident has not compromised game source code or its players details.

But data included in the ‘Call of Duty Modern Warfare II’ franchise had been impacted.

“On December 4, 2022, our information security team swiftly addressed an SMS phishing attempt and quickly resolved it,” a spokesperson told BleepingComputer.

“Following a thorough investigation, we determined that no sensitive employee data, game code, or player data was accessed.”

Popular games are often a target for scammers who try to capitalise off the excitement surrounding them.

‘The Last of Us’ fans have also been plagued by cyber scams, after HBO’s TV adaptation exploded in popularity.

New players of the videogame unfortunately emerged as a new target for phishing and malware schemes earlier this month, an investigation by security firms VPNOverview and Kaspersky revealed.

Fake offers for the ‘The Last of Us II’ game and bogus activation codes have been circulating the internet.

Experts have warned gamers to steer clear of ‘too goo to be true’ deals, as well as handing over personal or financial information in texts or emails.
