Champion Chase hope Edwardstone ‘lame most of last week’ after picking up injury

LEADING Champion Chase hope Edwardstone was ‘lame most of last week’ after picking up an injury.

The Alan King-trained two-miler bruised his foot in a narrow defeat to Editeur Du Gite at Cheltenham on January 28.

Edwardstone, last year’s Arkle winner, went down by a head in the rescheduled Clarence House Chase.

But he should be fine for the Wednesday feature at the Festival – providing there are no more setbacks.

King told the Racing Post: “Edwardstone was unfortunately lame for most of last week.

“I’m pleased to say he has a shoe back on now but he had a bruised foot after his run in the Clarence House at Cheltenham.

“It took five or six days to get him back sound. We did some x-rays which were all clear and provided there are no further problems then it’s not a concern.

“We’ve had a little niggle with him but he’s got plenty of time. It’s only a small setback.”

The sportsbook markets remained pretty steady after King’s comments, with Edwardstone and Energumene joint 7-4 favourites.

But Willie Mullins’ defending champion was being nibbled at slightly on the Betfair Exchange, from 3.0 to 2.88.

Edwardstone finished like a train in the Clarence House and briefly took the lead in the straight only to be headed by a determined Editeur Du Gite in the closing strides.

Energumene disappointed after crashing through the last to finish third as 4-9 fav.
