Punters gasp in horror as jockey Freddie Gingell smashes through wing of hurdle with race at his mercy

PUNTERS gasp in horror as jockey Freddie Gingell smashes through the wing of a hurdle with the race seemingly at his mercy.

Gingell had travelled beautifully on West Orchard in the opening handicap hurdle at Fontwell.

A dramatic opener at @FontwellPark, but it’s My Ticketyboo who gets home in front for @Chrisgordonrac1 and Freddie Gordon…

Gingell looked to be cruising on West Orchard until disaster struck two from home

The horse smashed through the wing of the hurdle and took the jockey with him

Trading as low as 1.17 on the Betfair Exchange, it looked like victory was in the bag for the six-year-old gelding.

But he appeared to get spooked going into the penultimate hurdle and veered violently to his left.

Gingell had absolutely no hope of controlling the Joe Tizzard-trained runner.

The horse smashed through the plastic wing and Gingell clattered through it too.

Fortunately both were unhurt in the dramatic scenes, but the chaos drew audible gasps from the crowd.

Gingell suffered another brutal unseat just last week in a race that saw namesake Freddie Gordon fall through a hurdle.

There was better news for Gordon here, though, as he won the race on 3-1 joint-favourite My Ticketyboo, trained by dad Chris.

Though punters were left licking their wounds after thinking 4-1 West Orchard had the race sewn up.

One wrote online: “Jesus Wept. If you’ve backed West Orchard there…

“Absolutely lobbing turning in, about to win on the snaff, 1.17 in-running and decides to run through a wing.”

While another moaned: “F*** me. Somebody up there does not like me.”
