‘Jonah Lomu vibes’ – Six Nations fans go wild as Scotland’s Van der Merwe scores stunning try from own half vs England

DUHAN VAN DER MERWE conjured “Jonah Lomu vibes” and was dubbed the “Rugby Messi” with a stunning solo try as Scotland pipped England 29-23 at Twickenham.

The South African-born wing was compared to New Zealand legend Lomu after beating FIVE players to score from his own half in the Scots’ thrilling Calcutta Cup win.

The “all-time great” try lit up both sides’ Six Nations opener AND social media as some fans went back 27 years for the last time they saw such wizardry.

Lomu destroyed England in the 1995 World Cup semi-final with four tries.

And Van der Merwe’s 60-metre effort sparked nostalgia and awe online – before he went over again for Scotland’s late match-winner.

One fan said: “Genuinely not seen a try like Duhan van der Merwe’s since these days.”

Another demanded: “Stop the count, this is it! Six Nations Try of the Tournament!”

Van der Merwe, 27, gathered an England kick well in his own half – and showed his intent straight away.

The Edinburgh Rugby star darted between two players, swerved beyond another, wrong-footed a fourth, and then palmed aside the final challenge to race over.

Not many argued with this verdict: “Great try, poor defence.”

But praise for VDW more than criticism of England flowed in.

And a few observers claiming his skill matched the individual goals from football GOAT Lionel Messi.

One posted: “Duhan van der Merwe has just scored one of the best tries you’ll see all year.”

And in fact jt was VDW who notched the decider as Scotland overturned England’s 23-22 lead with a superb team try six minutes from time.
