It took Championship promotion candidates Sheffield United less than two minutes to take the lead, Oli McBurnie powering home a header from a corner.
But Wrexham went toe to toe with their opponents, and levelled five minutes into the second half through James Jones after a long throw caused havoc in the area.
Another set-piece saw Wrexham take the lead, Thomas O’Connor slamming into the back of the net after the ball fell kindly to him from a corner.
But the home side led for just four minutes, with Oliver Norwood stroking home a measured equaliser.
Ten minutes later the Blades were reduced to ten-men, as Daniel Jebbison was sent off for kicking out at Ben Tozer in an off the ball incident.
And Mullin popped up late on to slot past Adam Davies for what looked to be the winner.
But the drama didn’t end there as Egan netted in injury time to break Wrexham hearts.
