The midfielder has been heavily linked with the Ibrox club this month following Michael Beale’s arrival.

And he now looks set to become the Gers’ first signing under the manager, who replaced Gio van Bronckhorst in November.

Several English Championship clubs were interested in the midfielder, who has four caps for England U21s, with Blackburn Rovers failing with an opening bid for the Rangers target earlier this month.

Rovers submitted an offer of around £1.5million for the playmaker but it was turned down.

Cantwell is out of contract at the end of the season and will be available on a free transfer in the summer, but Beale is keen on landing land him this month.

And Rangers are now closing in on the transfer as they have now had a bid accepted for the 24-year-old.

SunSport understands both clubs have reached an agreement over a deal with Rangers set to pay around £1.5million for his services – similar to what Blackburn submitted earlier in the window.

Cantwell is now set for a medical at Ibrox to become Rangers’ first transfer of the month.

The Light Blues are still chasing Swansea forward Morgan Whittaker too.

The striker hasn’t appeared for the Championship club since he was recalled from his loan at Plymouth earlier this month, where he scored nine goals and provided seven assists.

Swansea boss Russell Martin insisted his side received a bid from Rangers for Whittaker but claimed it had been turned it down.

However, Beale admitted he has heard nothing about an offer for the 22-year-old.

Asked about Martin’s claims of the bid rejection, Beale replied: “Did he really? I didn’t know we had made a bid but I will talk about the player.

“They have recalled him for a reason.

“I would say that he was one of the better – if not the best – player in League One in the first half of the season and unless they have recalled him to play him, they must have recalled him to move him to a higher level.

“I think he’s a good player but there is nothing more than that.

“And that is not what I have been told in-house.”
