Why listening to ‘pink noise’ will make you sleep on flights

TRYING to sleep on a plane can be difficult especially in economy, so many opt to listen to white noise.

However, experts have advised trying “pink noise” instead which will help you sleep much more.

Many holidaymakers play white noise, such as television static or a running vacuum, into their headphones to get some sleep on their flight.

According to Martin Seeley, the CEO and sleep expert at MattressNextDay, white noise can significantly improve sleep for people who experience difficulty nodding off because of high levels of environmental noise.

But many people who are trying to take a quick snooze in the air find white noise to be far too irritating.

The high-pitched hum has turned many away – instead, they’ve started using pink noise on planes to get some sleep.

Max Stevens a sleep expert at the Sleep Checklist explained that sounds such as waves or strong winds are classified as pink noise.

Max said that listening to these noises is a commonly-used sleeping technique – even on flights.

He added: “While the studies on pink noise are small they do show promising results.”

“If you have listened to white noise on a plane and it didn’t work for you, try pink noise as it could help you to settle quicker and sleep for more of your flight.”

Several TikTok users have praised the soothing ocean sounds.

One wrote: “I swear I couldn’t sleep the other night, but when I put it on [pink noise] it knocked me out in five minutes.”

While another posted a video with the caption: “I slept with that sleeping pink noise for the first time going to bed.

“I usually wake up very tired but today I woke up full of energy.”

As well as pink noise, Max Stevens recommended steering clear of in-flight entertainment too.

He explained that digital screens give off blue light, which suppresses melatonin, making it harder to nod off.

He said: “To get around the problem of blue light on your phone or other devices you can purchase blue light filtering glasses online that block out some of the blue light helping you to nod off quicker.”

Another way to improve sleep when you’re flying is by using an eye mask on your next flight.

The masks aren’t the only things travel experts rely on to help them sleep on planes, with some flight attendants swearing by this affordable item for a good snooze.
